HAGAN" stamped on title page.

A handsome copy of Schlegel’s excellent ichthyological work.

Illustrations of fish produced from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century are often non-empirical. It was Schlegel who composed guidelines, using the perch (Perca fluviatilis) as example, for creating realistic drawings which can be helpful for a correct determination of the species. A reliable Dutch reference work for contemporary ichthyologists.
